If you’re looking for a comprehensive video training on how to use all the features of QuarkXPress 8 — yes, all of them — look no further than, well, me.

A little while ago, I took on the herculean task of explaining how every feature in QuarkXPress 8 works. With examples. And files to go along with the examples. The result is an 8-hour hands-on tour, available at Lynda.com.

Below is their description. If you’re new to QuarkXPress, or if you want to understand the new features in versions 7 and 8, I hope you’ll have a look. The online training is available now, and the DVD will be released soon.

You can even watch 10 of the first movies for free!

——————————
QuarkXPress has always been the perfect tool for creating and publishing documents. In QuarkXPress 8 Essential Training, Jay Nelson—the publisher of Design Tools Monthly and a QuarkXPress expert—covers all the tools and features in this updated version of the program, from basic page layout to Flash integration and web page creation. Throughout this comprehensive training, Jay shows what’s needed to produce professional-quality projects that integrate text, pictures, graphics, and tables. He also offers real-world page layout techniques that designers can apply to their own projects. Exercise files accompany the course.

Software works on Mac and Windows.

Topics Include:

Understanding the QuarkXPress interface

Building a new layout and working with master pages

Using long document features to streamline workflow

Building QuarkXPress 8 documents with Adobe and Microsoft files

Creating custom styles using typography and picture effects

Collaborating in real time with other users

Exporting finished projects to PDF, Flash, and the web

Duration: 8 Hours

This video was made possible by our friends at Lynda.com.

The Print dialog box in QuarkXPress 7 and 8 looks quite different from previous versions. If you’ve ever wondered what all those options do in the Print dialog box, follow along with me as I lead you through each and every one of them — throwing in a few tips along the way.

You may be surprised at how some feature will make your printing life a lot more pleasurable. For example, do you know why you might choose “Rough” in the Pictures area of the Print dialog box? How about enabling or disabling the downloading of particular fonts? How about creating a new Print Style from within the dialog box?

Yes, gentle people, all these and more are explained in this 13-minute video, which was made possible by our friends at Lynda.com. They were gracious enough to share a selection of chapters from my “QuarkXPress 7 New Features“ video training, so I hand-picked several that I thought would be most appealing to new users of QuarkXPress 7 and QuarkXPress 8.

Everyone wants to see, on their own display, how their project is going to look when printed. In QuarkXPress 7 and 8, it’s possible to do just that.

The trick is to use Quark’s Job Jackets feature, and to place into the Job Jacket a profile for the device(s) that will be outputting the document. An additional Amazing Feature of this approach is that if the output process changes, simply dropping a new profile into the Job Jacket will cause all projects based on that Job Jacket to update their on-screen display. The designer doesn’t need to know anything about profiles — their project simply updates.

In this three-minute video, I show how to preview your document in any of about a dozen different color spaces, including the specific process color system you’ll be using.

One of the most outrageous and unique new features introduced in QuarkXPress 7 (and continued in QuarkXPress 8) is Shared Content. Imagine being able to have multiple copies of an item, on separate pages, or even in separate Layouts within a Project, and when you change one, all the others change as well.

But this “synchronization” goes farther than that: you can control whether the item’s properties and/or the properties of the item’s content changes. In other words, the color, size, opacity, etc., of a box can be synchronized, while the content can remain free to be different in each box. Or, the content of the box (text or picture) can be synchronized, while the box itself can look quite different in different instances.

Come see what I mean in this 13-minute video tutorial, courtesy of our friends at Lynda.com. They were gracious enough to share a selection of chapters from my “QuarkXPress 7 New Features” video training, so I hand-picked several that I thought would be most appealing to new users of QuarkXPress 7 and QuarkXPress 8.

Because our friends over at Lynda.com were gracious enough to share a selection of chapters from my “QuarkXPress 7 New Features“ video training, I hand-picked several that I thought would be most appealing to new users of QuarkXPress 7 and QuarkXPress 8.

This is the fifth in the series, and it shows how to manipulate the layers, channels and paths in a native Photoshop file, directly inside QuarkXPress 7 or 8. The “PSD Import” palette is where this magic occurs, and it functions exactly like the Layers palette in Photoshop — you can turn layers on and off, and adjust their Blending Mode and opacity. You can also instantly enable or disable alpha channels and paths.

But it goes even further: for example, QuarkXPress automatically creates new “spot colors” in the document for every spot color channel in the Photoshop document. That way, you can create a mask in Photoshop for areas where you want to apply a varnish, spot color, emboss or foil, and then QuarkXPress makes it “checkbox easy” to print those extra plates.

If you like, you can even map the “colors” coming in from Photoshop to existing colors in QuarkXPress. That way, you can add Photoshop’s masked areas to your existing items that you intend to apply a varnish, spot color, foil or emboss to.

See exactly how to do all these things in this 12-minute video:
